The Tanah Lot Temple is dedicated to all the gods associated with the sea. This is why the Hindu temple is also called the Sea Temple. The Pura Tanah Lot is one of nine state temples on Bali and is one of a series of seven sea temples along the coast.
Beautiful photos of the temple rising out of the water against the glowing sunset sky are a must for almost every traveller to Bali. A unique atmosphere surrounds it; impressive and more than extraordinary, as it stands there in the middle of the sea.
In fact, the nature and shadow cracking spectacle performed by the sea temple and sunset right in front of the ocean shore is considered one of the most unforgettable experiences of a Bali trip.
Tanah Lot registers huge numbers of visitors each year - so be prepared that you won't be able to take a photo without a crowd of people in it. But don't let that put you off: when the sun sets, colourfully, you will be awestruck by the beauty of the world.
Sacred and wholesome
The temple itself may only be entered by devout Hindus, and this is only possible at low tide. And only then can a priest show you the sacred freshwater spring that rises at the foot of the island rock.
Its water is said to have healing powers; anyone who wants to drink it must make a small donation to the guardian. The same applies opposite on the shore of the mainland, where a priest guards a small cave (Ular Suci) where black and white banded, highly poisonous sea snakes live. These snakes have supposedly never bitten anyone.
How to reach the temple
It is located in the southwest of Bali, the next bigger town being Kuta. If you drive north, you will reach the capital Tabanan of the district of the same name. From Kuta, it can even be reached on foot or by bicycle.
